Shoji FUNAKAWA / 船川翔司

Born in Kagoshima Prefecture in 1987, lives and works in Osaka Prefecture. He is primarily involved in residential productions on uninhabited islands and research on meteorological phenomena like ‘wind holes’ formed by volcanic activity. It’s said that he started thinking about the natural sciences, specifically ‘meteorology’, to understand his experiences more universally whenever he rethinks specific environments through personal experiences. His work is conceptualized around ‘experiencing things as they are’. This understanding is deeply connected to the religious view, and its imagery extends to others, spaces, and time, providing a transcendent sensation. He uses these ideas to present his works, which utilize diverse methods and are composed of various materials. His works span the genres of visual arts, music, and performance.
